All right, so it’s the day of O, and I missed the day of N by ‘that’ much! Had a good writing day yesterday, and want to tell you about it.
I wrote a novella for the 3 Day Novel Contest — and if you’ve never tried it, do! It’s amazing — more like a sprint than the thirty day NaNoWriMo. 3 days to pull together a novel. Trust me, you’re getting slightly less than a first draft in that time, but the novella I wrote I really liked. It had a great main character — a dead guy named Farley Hewitt. However, when I rewrote it, I couldn’t get it must past 60,000 words. The limits I had put on the character put terrible limits on me too. So I set it aside.
But Farley stayed in my mind. His was a story that deserved to be told. So I decided to use another character — a girl named Marie Jenner, who could see him — as the second point of view person. And then the thing really started to come alive.
I finished that novel — but had a coincidence in it that I absolutely hated. Couldn’t see a way around it, and decided if coincidences could happen in real life, they could happen in a book, too. But it niggled at my brain.
I sent it out to a couple of places — but wasn’t really sure of the genre (yeah, I know, but wow, sometimes that’s harder than you think!) and it didn’t find a home. (Both took the full, so it was gone a LONG time. You know how that is.) So I decided to write the second in the series. (That is the novel I’m working on right now.)
Yesterday, I decided to redo the query and the synopsis, and get the first one back out in the world. And you know what I found? I found the answer to the coincidence knot! I’m so happy, I can barely speak. I’m supposed to go out today (to a wedding shower, can you believe it? I didn’t know they still did those things) but all I want to do is dive in, undo the knot, and have that novel finally as ready as I can get it.
I guess I’ll have to wait until tomorrow. But tomorrow’s going to be a very good day!
Hooray for figuring out knots! I’m excited for you.
Congratulations on the novella! I love days when the writing just seems to flow forth. I’m so glad I found your blog. I’m stopping by from the A to Z challenge and I look forward to reading more from you.
Thank you Sylvia. I love those good writing days, too. I’ll be by to visit your blog. It’s nice to meet you.
Elizabeth, Hooray right back at you! I am thrilled too. Thanks for dropping by.
